09-17: Romance Fiction

Romance Fiction

As a genre of fiction, the weeding guideline for romance is X/2/MUSTIE.

The CREW Manual says:
“For most public libraries, circulation is the primary factor for weeding fiction. Discard works no longer in demand, especially second and third copies of past bestsellers. Retain works that are in demand and/or of high literary merit, but replace worn copies with new editions. Discard lesser works by classic authors if they are not circulating. Consider discarding all titles in a series if you are not able or willing to replace missing titles, especially if the books do not stand alone.”

When it comes to romance, patrons tend to revisit favorite works, and like to re-read a series when a new book comes out, making weeding tricky. More than likely you will be discarding someone's favorite series or author. Try and be strong! Use your reading advisory skills and help steer patrons toward new, and/or similar authors.

When weeding romance, keep an eye on the most worn copies of a particular author or series, as well as requests made at the circulation, and/or adult services desk to spot popular subgenre romance trends (e.g. paranormal romance, contemporary romance, western romance, Victorian romance, etc.). Discard works no longer in demand, especially second and third copies of past bestsellers, for example, weed multiple copies of Fifty Shades of Grey series by E.L. James, and Nicholas Sparks novels. Try to replace worn copies with new editions if the book is a high circulation romance. Adding stat. codes to works of romance fiction will help guide weeding decisions, and help you to see reading trends.
