12-17: Crafts

Crafts

Crafts, AKA Drawing and Decorative Arts, are located in the 740s. The section includes items on drawing and cartooning techniques, instruction on fiber arts such as weaving, crocheting, and knitting, along with books on all sorts of crafty endeavors such as beading, flower arranging, and origami. Your collection may look completely different from someone else's depending on what sort of crafts your community is into. And that's OK! But to keep your collection in top condition and up to date with the latest crafts, the CREW guidelines suggest that items be reviewed which meet X/3/MUSTIE. The publication date does not matter in this area. Items should be considered for removal if they have not circulated in 3 or more years and, of course, if they are MUSTIE. Keep your eyes and ears open for new and resurging crafts as they do tend to come and go in trends. I thought it was interesting that CREW recommends removing items on macrame which is actually coming back into fashion these days. Scrapbooking, which was very popular 10 years ago, has mostly disappeared as a hobby.

To search for items in this section using the PAC, try typing in 'drawing', 'crafts', 'handicrafts', or any number of individual hobbies, such as those mentioned above. But, actually, the easiest method for producing a comprehensive list for this diverse area is by using Simply Reports. In Report output columns, some criteria you may wish to use to create a useful list are Item Call Number, Item Lifetime Circ Count, Item Last Check in Date, Item Circ Status, MARC Title, MARC Author, and MARC Pub Year. Then in Item general filters, limit the Collection to Adult Non-Fiction and Material type to Hardcover and Trade Paperback. Under Item call number filters, check the box next to Classification number and fill in the boxes for the range 741 to 746.9999. Scroll back to the top of the page and click Submit.

All of the titles below are simply suggestions. Because of the diversity in handcrafts and communities, something may go out like gangbusters in one library while sitting quietly collecting dust in another. The point is to get in there, see what gets checked out, what needs updating, and what kinds of creative crafty people live in your community!
