The focus of the meeting was to discuss the proposed cataloging changes in the documents “Foreign Language Cataloging Proposal,” as presented by the guests in attendance. The guests had concerns about the speed at which foreign language materials are cataloged, specifically Korean language materials, and were proposing ways in which to both speed up and consistently standardize the issues. The documents in question were discussed at great detail. Specific concerns addressed included:

  • How will changes to the processing of Korean language processing affect the processing of other World Languages?
  • What is the proper way for non-Roman languages and the transliterated versions to be cataloged?
  • Would any changes create an undue burden for the BCCLS catalogers, who are already handling a high workload?

After great discussion, the SPTF was asked if anyone had a motion to approve the suggested changes in the Foreign Language Catalog Proposal. No one made a motion so no changes will be made at the moment.

The World Language subscription service was discussed, and it was decided that Paul Shaver would send out a survey to BCCLS libraries about it. The questions would address both how to improve the service for people already using it, and what reasons are there for libraries who don’t subscribe.

The World Language page for the BCCLS website that was presented at the 1/31 meeting was discussed again. Both the guests and SPTF members had concerns about the severe difference in the numbers presented and the numbers known to be in collections. Yumi Choi pointed out that if a large number of items are in the catalog under an Uncataloged Bib Record, than those collectively count as one title in the list. One suggestion for fixing this is to have the numbers of the item records attached to each Uncataloged Bib Record be counted separately. Yumi said she would discuss that idea with Mike Grgurev. In the meantime, the SPTF decided to remove the numbers entirely with the goal of figuring out a solution for the incorrect counts by June.

The meeting concluded when Lisa Hoffman moved to end it and Leslie Kruegel seconded it.

The next meeting will take place on Wednesday, March 14 at 10:00 a.m. at the BCCLS Office.
