Review of 2018 Charges

Salary Survey – Gretchen will work with the BCCLS office to get things underway. A period of four weeks to complete and a due back date of late summer is ideal so final document is available for budget planning. There is little to no revisions needed to the front facing side of the survey. The back side of the survey needs to be tweaked in order to allow directors more options for extracting and comparing data. No directors voiced the need for changes when the survey was distributed last year as there had been requests in previous years. It seems that the current iteration is met with satisfaction. If necessary a smaller committee will be formed to directly oversee the salary survey charge. It was also discussed if Library Board Presidents should be sent the Salary Survey each year. The committee consensus was to continue to send only to directors. Directors could then forward on to anyone they deem appropriate recipients.

Programs – Many ideas were discussed for repeating programs from prior years (Climbing the Ladder, New Professionals Breakfast) as well as new programs for current topics (i.e. Construction Bond Act, Sick Payout for Part Time Staff [which has already been suggested by the membership to Gretchen], How to Ask for More Than 1/3 Mil, Library Budgeting 101, Obtaining Outside Funding, Employee Handbook Updating, etc.) – some of these programs would have to be offered soon to coincide with the timeline of their implementation). It was decided that some would be best presented if co-hosted with another committee and/or was offered as part of series in succession with programs from other committees. The Climbing the Ladder program could be one of the sessions in the Supervisory Training Program (STP). STP and the New Professionals Breakfast were previously hosted by the now defunct Professional Development Committee. LAMP seems to be the committee most suited to continue these offerings. The New Professionals breakfast would this year include those enrolled in MLS programs if they employed at a BCCLS library. The program will be held in June at either Franklin Lakes, North Bergen, or West Caldwell.

The Supervisory Training Program is a big undertaking and would likely require LAMP to form a subcommittee to coordinate it. It typically took place September through April but due to committee year adjustment the program may be held during a different six month time frame. Allison will contact the instructor from the 2016 training to seek pricing and availability. For a program on sick leave law, the committee will reach out to HASH labor lawyer Dominick Bratti and Michael Cerrone. A survey might be sent to directors in advance of the program to form an outline for the program.

Community Circle Breakfasts – These have been offered for several years now and they prove to be extremely popular. Although there is little time left to host any spring breakfasts, one will be offered in June. This will be open topic in order to guide LAMP on areas of focus for larger programs. More breakfasts will be scheduled in fall and winter and will again focus on Civil Service, Unions, etc. LAMP held five breakfasts last year and would offer at least that many, this year.

New Directors Orientation – This program was extremely well received last year. It was held in late May. Again due to committee calendar year changing there is not a way to add this to the schedule so quickly. At present there are five new directors and three openings. The orientation will be held in the fall in hopes of having a total of eight new directors. A date will be chosen at the June LAMP meeting. Looking for NBPL to host again as space worked well last year.

Gretchen will give a report of LAMP activity at the June System Council Meeting.
