BCCLS Adult Services Committee Meeting Minutes

       Friday May 18, 2018 10:00 am, Ridgewood Public Library


Call to Order took place approx. 10:05 am by Lorri Steinbacher, Chair

Those in Attendance: Lorri Steinbacher- Ridgewood, Julia Nock- Closter, Julie Whitehead- Dumont, Leann Lydon- Garfield, Dawn Petretti-Silvera- Glen Ridge, Cathy Folk-Pushee- Hackensack, Gina Gerard- Hawthorne, Jessica Bielen- Hawthorne, Jonna Davis- Teaneck, Katie Neylan- Upper Saddle River, Molly McKenney- Upper Saddle River, Ethan Galvin- West Caldwell, Janet Dunn- Westwood, Eric Lozauskas- BCCLS

Welcome and Introductions took place.

A volunteer recorder was requested. Gina Gerard offered to take the minutes.

  1. 1.      Review of Committee Charges.

A discussion was held on Staff development and training, Collection Development including e-BCCLS, and creating a repository of adult programming/vendors that all could share.  What topics did the committee think were of importance?

  1. A.     Staff Development and Training
  • It was decided on by the entire committee present that we should go ahead and submit a proposal to Cindy for the Guerilla Branding Professional Development Workshop. Proposed time of year was October of 2018. Proposed days of the week were Wednesday or Thursday. Suggested libraries for hosting were Mahwah, Wyckoff and Hasbrouck Heights.
  • Another topic for the Spring of 2019 was Reader's Advisory as a workshop. The comment “position yourself as the Reading Expert” was made as an introduction to this idea. Proposed time of the year was for March 2019. Proposed time of the week was Thursday. Proposed date- March 28, 2019.
  • There is a possibility for a BCCLS Con in 2019.
  • Creating video and paper tutorials (screen shots) on how a patron can use Consumer Reports, Ebsco, Rosetta Stone, Ref USA, Novelist, etc. (this is a “How to Reference” for both staff and patrons). Best possible video apps- screencast, monosnap, imovie, jing, and open broadcaster.


  1. B.      Collection Development
  • Lorri touched base with old committee members to discuss the Librarian A-Z approved sites. This is a list of approved websites that any reference librarian can refer back to when assisting patrons with specific topic needs. According to the old committee members some of the website links need to be updated and tested for link rot. “Tips of the month” were going to be the most likely situation.  Suggestions included back to school help for certain topics and if you are looking for this… you need to go here… Topics to begin with will be travel, business, medical, and performing arts.
  • It was decided by the committee members present to drop Book Clubbing lists. If we wanted to offer helpful tips on how to start a book club that would be great.
  • It was decided that weeding tips should continue. As to the topics, we would first look at last year's lists and choose different subjects. A Google Sheet will be created for sign-ups for committee members.
  • eBCCLS- A discussion on creating an eBCCLS accessible suggestion form for staff for ebooks.
  1. C.      Develop and maintain a repository of Adult Programming and Vendors
  • It was decided that a database for quality programming and performers should be created. Pros and cons of each should be included. It was also decided that we should have committee members take a few BCCLS libraries each and contact them to find out who the head of adult services are and include them in on providing information on programming. This database would be provided for all BCCLS libraries to use.
  1. 2.      Other Business
  • We want an Adult Service social mixer! The committee would like to have a gathering with other staff off-site. The thoughts were a patio party at the Ridgewood Library or at the Westwood Community Center where a photo booth, trivia games, etc. could take place. It was decided that the Westwood Community Center would be a great place to host this event. It was decided that Sept 7th (after the summer reading is over) this should happen. 
  • Future dates for meetings were discussed. The next meeting will be at Hawthorne on June 12, 2018 at 10:00 am.  Tuesdays in the am works best for the majority.
