eBCCLS COMMITTEE

MINUTES

March 28, 2019 - 10:00 am

Upper Saddle River Public Library

Present: Aimee Harris (Hoboken), Alexandra Bickel (Mahwah), Elizabeth Portelli (Fair Lawn), George Galuschak (Montvale), Holly Pizzuta (Weehawken), Margaret Mallett (Wood-Ridge), Mary-Jean Gurzenda (West Orange), Molly McKenney (Upper Saddle River Public Library), Tim Baek (Closter), Eric Lozauskas (BCCLS)

 1.  Welcome:

The Meeting was called to order at 10:01 by Molly McKenney.

 2.  Old Business:

 None

 3.  New Business:

  • Budget:
    • Discussion of how often BCCLS is charged, we must spend smartly so there are enough funds by the end of the year. Suggestion to lower spending in the summer to give a cushion before fall/winter. The committee asked for total dollar amount spent per type of item, books vs. audio.
  • Continuing Education:
    • There is a need for instruction for both staff (Overdrive Advantage and generally using eBCCLS on different devices) and patrons. Committee members are asked to share whatever materials they have.
    • Eric will look into getting Overdrive Marketplace accounts for committee members.
    • In the near future we would like to make a YouTube video for BCCLS home page, and also do in person trainings at different libraries (both group and/or one-to-one). Eric will contact Overdrive to possibly do staff trainings.
    • We will coordinate with the Adult Services committee in April to possibly have the Overdrive Truck come to GSP in July to promote the BCCLS Big Read and to sign people up for library cards.
  • Collection Development Policy
    • The committee would like to make possible changes to the policy, specifically regarding the 5 to 1 ratio for holds and the maximum number of copies per title purchased.
    • Criteria wording possibly changed to better reflect eContent and metered access. Big picture - do we want the collection to be broad vs. popular? Discussion of how “broad appeal” in the fourth criteria is defined.
  • Automatic Checkouts
    • Discussion of whether or not the default setting on Overdrive can/should be changed from automatic borrow.
  • Patron and Staff Recommendations
    • Overdrive Advantage - up to libraries to purchase old/obscure things.
    • Staff recommendations can be done on the Support page.
    • Professional recommendations are good to have as input for aggregators.
  • RBdigital Alternatives
    • RBdigital has a slow response time, drops titles. Eric will find out if individual libraries can add titles mid year. They still have one of the largest collections. We should continue to look for alternatives.

Thursday, May 23rd, 2019, 10 am at the Mahwah Library
