05-15: LGBQ Books for Teens

LGBTQ Books for Teens

People often say that stories can act as mirrors or windows.  It is important that we provide books that reflect the various identities of all our patrons - ethnic, religious, political, sexual, and gender. Your teen collection should include current fiction and non-fiction that act as both mirrors and windows.

Included in the weeding section are a number of non-fiction books that are outdated in terms of laws, attitudes, and resource lists for LGBTQ teens. Please remember that some of the books are bound very nicely and don't show wear (I'm looking at the uncracked spine of many Opposing Viewpoint books), but they have misleading or dated information. Other books escape the “dusty list” or “dead” reports because patrons might not check the copyright date before hitting “Place Request” or checking the item out (that means you Same-Sex Marriage, Pro and Con: A Reader (c1997), all 7 copies circulated in 2013-2014).

The C.R.E.W guidelines for 306 (Culture & Institutions): This section includes books on marriage, family life, and sexuality. Discard as interest in the author or title wanes. Unless a book has an historical approach, the topic is usually outdated within five years. 5/2/MUSTIE
