Presentation of Library Card

Since the home library is liable for materials borrowed by its patrons, it is expected that BCCLS libraries circulate materials only to patrons presenting a valid library card. Libraries may not circulate materials to out-of-town patrons who fail to present a valid library card issued by a BCCLS library. Presentation of a library card to borrow library materials, or for any other library functions requiring presentation of a card, constitutes representation that the presenter is the legitimate card holder. BCCLS libraries are entitled to request identification from any patron presenting a library card.

All library staff who wish to borrow materials must have a valid library card.

It is recommended that all libraries adopt a policy that a valid library card must be presented in order to circulate materials. At the BCCLS/system level, the presentation of a patron's physical library card is required when borrowing materials. Signage with this policy has been provided to member libraries for posting.

A member library may choose to determine locally what constitutes a valid library card for their own patrons at their home library, i.e. physical card, digital representation, or alternate forms of identification. These local decisions carry no weight or expectation of borrowing privileges at other BCCLS member libraries.
