08-15: Home Economics

Home Economics

There are few single Dewey sections with such breadth as 640: Home Economics and Family Living. This catch-all classification includes books on some of the latest trending topics, including homesteading and home organization. Following the recession, interest in DIY (Do-It-Yourself) homemaking, self-sufficiency, and sustainability has skyrocketed. Many traditional methods haven't changed—we're still cleaning with vinegar and we've returned to making candles with beeswax. However, outdated, grubby editions of classic titles won't attract new homeowners and young families. Additionally, new works on urban homesteading and minimalist decluttering are all the rage. Take hold of this resurgence of Laura Ingalls Wilder nostalgia and run with it.

The C.R.E.W. guidelines are as follows:

5/3/MUSTIE. That means items older than 5 years or which have not circulated in 3 years, or, which are MUSTIE (Misleading, Ugly, Superseded, Trivial, Irrelevant, Elsewhere).

640 is the Dewey number that focuses on Home Economics. While the CREW method says nothing specifically about this section, it does mention that physical condition is a factor for all books in the 640s, as they “become grungy quickly” with use. There are many encyclopedic style reference books in this area. Old editions should be replaced with new as they become available. It is important and useful to take current environmental standards and green living trends into account.
