10-15: Baking

This tiny little section of Dewey could easily take up several shelves in any library's nonfiction collection. But while our favorite recipes haven't changed much over time (who among us still uses our mom's holiday cookie recipe?), their presentation certainly has. Photographs in older baking cookbooks can easily look dated so those should be the first to go. Ingredients can be dated, too. Watch out for recipes that call for “shortening” or “margarine, or even those with high sugar contents, as they can easily push someone to put a book back on the shelf rather than checking it out. Today's bakers are also looking for new takes on Grandma's classics – be they gluten free or vegan, new bakers want authentic flavor without compromising dietary goals. Still, tried and true classics are always in demand, so make sure your copies are in good shape!

The C.R.E.W. guidelines are as follows:

5/3/MUSTIE. That means items older than 5 years or which have not circulated in 3 years, or, which are MUSTIE (Misleading, Ugly, Superseded, Trivial, Irrelevant, Elsewhere).

641.86 is the Dewey number that focuses on Baking. The CREW guidelines don't go into detail on this specific subsection of the 640s, but they do instruct us to “be ruthless” and use physical condition as our main criteria for weeding. Also, weed books written by chefs whose popularity has waned, or those based on diets that are no longer main stream. Replace classics with newer editions whenever possible.
