12-15: Nonfiction for Teens

Nonfiction for Teens: Not Just for Homework

Having a vibrant collection of informational books for teen leisure reading is vitally important for two reasons. First, studies have revealed that many readers, especially boys, prefer nonfiction over narrative fiction.  Secondly, readers need to be comfortable reading and evaluating informational texts. As in all nonfiction collections currency is critical, but especially in Teen collections. Fads and trends change rapidly and the nonfiction must keep up.

Guidelines for Young Adult Nonfiction collections can be found in Crew: a weeding manual for modern libraries

“This section is almost entirely leisure reading and should be kept as current as possible. Anything older than five years should be kept only if it is circulating well” p.35

“J and YA Nonfiction Use adult criteria for each Dewey category, but look especially for inaccuracy and triviality—common faults of over-simplified children's nonfiction.” p.83
