The Task Force's panel has been officially scheduled for June 14 at 10:00 a.m. at the Paramus Library on 116 East Century Road.  Victoria Hilditch will be the moderator/emcee for the event.

  • Michelle Ferreira has contacted Larry Braverman from Project Literacy about speaking on how immigration has affected his organization.  He will most likely be bringing a second speaker to address another facet of ESL issues.
  • Michelle Ferreira is also trying to contact a lawyer to discuss immigration lawyers; her schedule will not allow her to confirm until early May.
  • Laura Rios is waiting to hear back from USCIS.  Michelle Ferreira has offered to assist with this contact.
  • Hongmei Liu and Martha Urbiel have arranged for Enola Romano to speak on behalf of the NJLA Diversity and Outreach Committee on how they and libraries are handling all of the panel topics being covered.

Leslie Kruegel compiled a list of the various languages BCCLS libraries have materials for, and identified the libraries with the most items in such collections.  In the future, the group would like  to encourage libraries to have their uncataloged  World Language collections cataloged; this project could be performed by multilingual employees at various libraries.

The script for the video on staff interacting with non-English speakers was approved.  Laura Rios, Jill DeMarco and Hongmei Liu will contact Dan Lane about filming the video at the BCCLS office.  This raised a debate on whether Google Translate is the most viable tool for working with non-English speakers, but no one was aware of a better solution.

Another future issue to focus on is communicating with deaf and blind patrons.

Paul will be working on a survey to gather a master list of bilingual/polylingual individuals working in BCCLS libraries and their translation talents.  This list will include levels of expertise in each language and skill translating brochures, webpages, etc.

Lisa Hoffman will be working on creating a website for the Task Force.

The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, May 10 at 10:00 at the Hasbrouck Heights Library.
