Barcoding/Linking Multi-Piece Items

Policy:

Items that have more than one piece must be linked as one item and must have only one barcode. 

Recommendation:

Use the notes field and the library assigned block “Check Contents”, then include the number of discs or related materials in the free text block: i.e.: “2 discs” when linking multi-part items. 

Owning Library Identification

Recommendation:

All items should be labeled with the owning library's name on the exterior of the material. Acceptable labeling includes, but is not limited to, stickers, stamps, or barcodes which include the library name.  

Marking an Item's Value

Recommendation:

In order to alert patrons and library staff when dealing with material of high value, any items with a replacement cost equal to or greater than $100 should be labeled with the specific cost on the exterior of the item. Labels and the value in the item’s record should be consistent.

Barcode Placement

Recommendation:

To facilitate efficiency in the circulation process system wide, barcode placement on library material is recommended as follows:

 Books

Library barcodes should be placed horizontally and away from any other barcodes on the material that can be scanned (ISBN, UPC, etc.).  The recommended locations for library barcodes are:

  • Inside front cover
  • Inside back cover
  • Back cover

DVDs/Games

Library barcodes should be placed along the top of the case.  The recommended locations for library barcodes are:

  • Front cover
  • Back cover
  • Inside of case

Multi-Disc Sets

A free text block should be added to the item record to indicate number of pieces.  The number of pieces should also be identified near the library barcode.  The recommended locations for the library barcode are:

  • Front cover
  • Back cover
  • Inside of case

CDs

The recommended locations for the library barcode are:

  • On the back of the insert
  • On the front of the insert
  • Under CD 

Books on CD

A free text block should be added to the item record to indicate number of pieces.  The number of pieces should also be identified near the library barcode.  The recommended locations for the library barcode are:

  • Front cover
  • Inside back cover

Playaways

The library barcode should be placed directly on the playaway unit.

Read-Alongs

A free text block should be added to the item record to indicate number of pieces.  The library barcode should be placed on the book.
