Stuffed Animal Sleepover

Stuffed Animal Sleepover

(Grades Pre-K - 4th)

30 minute storytime followed by teen volunteer involvement, with the Librarian overseeing the program to completion

Number of Attendees:

10 (varies, from 5 to 10 animals is best)

We asked patrons to register, and they got a reminder email. This way we could keep it to about 10 children with their stuffed animal.

Prep time:

  • 30 minutes prep to make name tags for both the child and, when they arrived, for the animals (that helped us keep things straight)
  • Handed out permission slips for letting the animal sleep over
  • Prepare storytime - choose a few books to read
  • 1 hour for some fun picture taking of animals all around the library
  • 30 minutes of letter writing by teen volunteers
  • Kids pick up animals the next day

Total time: 2 hours with help from Teen volunteers

  • Camera
  • Name tags
  • Permission slips
  • Storytime materials
  • Teens to help
  • Paper
  • Pencils
  • Imagination
  • Facebook

Description of Program:

“They're the actual loveys of young children who left them at the library for a 'sleepover'. Library workers snap photos of them choosing books, reading together, bonding over 'The Rainbow Fish'. When kids pick them up the next day, they can see how much fun their little friends had with books -- and the hope is that it will encourage more children to explore reading.” --From CNN's coverage of the program.

  2. Permission slip we had the kids fill out:
  3. Letter we gave the children when they picked up their animals the next day:

Minimal - under $5 (only involves some paper for writing letters from the stuffed animals to their owner)
