Unicorn Wand

One hour

Materials:

  • Unicorn Books
  • Dowels (pencils/pipe cleaners can be used as substitutes)  
  • Ribbons / Yarn (various colors/widths/textures)
  • Duct Tape (Colorful/Silver/Gold)

Optional:

  • Markers to color the dowels
  • White Glue
  • Glitter to make “horn” sparkle!

Description of Program:

A colorful wand made to use to accompany a unicorn themed storytime. Uni the Unicorn by Amy Krouse Rosenthal & Thelma the Unicorn by Aaron Blabey were the books we read. A unicorn coloring page was made available to entertain those who finished early or to take home.

Instructions:

  1. Cut ribbons double the length of the dowels. (Have this done prior/ Teen Volunteers help you with preparation!)
  2. Tie ribbons at top of dowel.
  3. Wrap Duct Tape around knot at top to secure ribbon as well as create the “horn”.
  4. (Optional) Paint the “horn” with white glue, and dip in glitter for some extra sparkle.

Cost:

(all costs are approximate, supplies were left over from various projects)

  • $5.00 Duct Tape
  • $7.00 Dowels
  • $1.00 X 7 of ROY G BIV Ribbon or Yarn

Miscellaneous:

A fun program, will do again. FYI: More girls in attendance / Boys liked stories but could make Wizard Wand instead.
