Who Was? Biography Book Club: Walt Disney

Who Was? Biography Book Club: Walt Disney

(Grades 2-5)

Number of Attendees:

We set up registration for 10-12 kids. We always have registration, but sometimes kids just join that are at the library. You do not have to read the book prior to coming to the event, but we do recommend it as it will help aide in the discussions we have.

Length:

Prep time for the program takes about an hour.

The program is about 45 minutes to one hour.

We usually try to do discussion for 30 minutes and craft time for the other 30. Sometimes if the discussion is not working we start to work on the project and it helps spark up a conversation again.

Materials:

  • Copies of the book (I order 10 through BCCLS)
  • Paper Plates
  • Paint
  • Paint Brushes
  • Buttons
  • Glue Sticks
  • Newspapers to put down on the tables

Description of Program:

For the first half of the program, we discuss Walt Disney and what we have learned about him. We go around the table and talk about the different Disney movies we liked and even discuss what we would do if we were Walt Disney. The second half of the program we create our Mickey Craft. Shapes were pre-cut and the children painted their pieces. During the creation of our Mickey craft, we talk about what book we might want to discuss next. The children also have time to socialize with one another and meet children they have never met before.

Instructions:

Prep
Cut paper plates middle part out so you have a circle. You will also make smaller circles (through Word is perfect) and have them pre-cut as well. Creating a sample before is a good idea because the children can have a better understanding of what you want them to create.

Cost:

Depending on what you may already have in your craft supplies you may not need to buy anything! However… if you do the costs are fairly small and you can find sets of paper plates for as cheap as $2. Paints and Paint brushes may cost a bit more.

Miscellaneous:

I normally do not need to move the tables around in the area that I have my event in. If you do need to move tables, I would recommend moving them early before the event.

Afterthoughts:

Doing promotion for the program would be really helpful. A lot of the teachers in second and third grade may use the books in their class. You can also now incorporate the Netflix series with your program too.
