Description of the Program

This was done as an outreach to schools. The children were doing an author study of Mo Willems. I had them sit for story time, read them some of his elephant and piggy books and some of his pigeon books. I gave them popsicle sticks with the word “No” in a comic bubble to hold up when I was reading the pigeon books. We then did an extension activity in the form of a flannel board where I held up a picture of something and had them say what the pigeon should not do. (baby, boat, candy , cactus, scissors- don't let the pigeon feed the baby, sail the boat, eat too much candy, touch the cactus, run with scissors). Then we went to our seats and came up with our own ideas. The kids raised their hands and the ideas were written on the board. They then wrote the words on their page (see form) and drew a picture. I color copied the pictures and returned originals to kids. The copies were put in a book in the library for the kids to see. It is displayed on the children's desk. I plan on doing this with more classes in the future. It was super easy, fun, and cheap. The teacher was my only helper, and it was done in their classroom. Following is an image of the word bubbles I give out, a blank page for the kids to make their own idea, and a cover for the binder.
